Applications On The Web
NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its overall strategy to bring
Java to the Enterprise, Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS) today announced that
PowerJ, its enterprise Java(TM) application development tool, is scheduled to
be generally available within 30 days. PowerJ sets the standard for enterprise
Java development by delivering advanced database capabilities and seamless
integration with Sybase Jaguar CTS(TM) for building real-world business
applications on the Web.
"Sybase believes the promise of Java is to enable universally-accessible,
distributed applications for the Internet," said Rob Veitch, Director and
General Manager of Powersoft Languages. "PowerJ goes beyond the first
generation of Java tools by building on the Sybase Adaptive Component
Architecture(TM) to provide an open, component-based solution for delivering
Java on all tiers."
Enterprise-Class Development Environment
In order to ensure that applications built today can be enhanced tomorrow,
PowerJ delivers open support for key industry standards including
JavaBeans(TM), ActiveX, CORBA, JDBC(TM), the Sun and Microsoft VMs, and
emerging application frameworks such as JFC and AFC.
PowerJ leverages features of the award-winning Power++ to provide
developers with a highly productive, component-based development system with
drag-and-drop programming and wizards. The development environment includes
over 240 pure Java components that are fully compliant with JavaSoft's JDK 1.1
and 1.02.
PowerJ is built for team development and includes feature hooks into
popular version control systems, and an innovative Web Application Target that
provides developers with a simple way to integrate editing, debugging, and
publishing of all aspects of a Web application.
"The Powersoft tools have a proven track record for delivering enterprise
development environments that meet the needs of corporate developers," said
Norman Cook, Project Leader, Gibson Petroleum Company. "The productivity of
PowerJ combined with high performance database features and powerful in-
context debugging carries on this tradition."
Extending Client/Server To The Web
PowerJ offers exceptional database support with a powerful set of "data-
aware" components including a sophisticated grid component. All of the data-
aware components can be used with any JDBC source. Also included is a query
component that enables client-side caching for fast display and updates.
PowerJ includes Sybase jConnect(TM) for JDBC, a full thin-client JDBC
implementation for fast 100% Java native database access to the Sybase
Adaptive Server family of databases. Sybase jConnect can also be used to
access more than 20 other enterprise databases. Adaptive Server Anywhere, a
three user version of the award winning relational database, is also included
providing a complete environment for building and testing applications.
"We needed an enterprise-class Java application development tool to build
our intranet applications," said Ganesh Bell, Senior Consultant, First Union
National Bank. "PowerJ offers an easy-to-use development environment with
advanced data-aware controls and a pure Java solution for fast and easy access
to our databases. The inclusion of Adaptive Server Anywhere with its remote
capabilities let us extend the application to our mobile users. Sybase is the
only company to deliver a complete enterprise Java solution."
Build Multi-Tier Web OLTP Applications
PowerJ makes it easy for developers to create new JavaBeans components and
deploy them on all tiers. PowerJ includes Jaguar CTS to provide a scaleable,
high performance middle-tier deployment environment with flexible transaction
management. Developers can quickly deploy their business logic as JavaBeans
running in Jaguar CTS and use the PowerJ data-aware controls to return and
display result sets without additional coding.
"Sybase has actively participated in the development of the JavaBeans
component model", said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of software products at
Sun Microsystems' Javasoft business unit. "We believe Sybase is a leader is
extending Java to the enterprise, and that PowerJ - with its capability to
quickly and easily create JavaBeans for all tiers - is an essential part of
that strategy. PowerJ is an ideal tool for making Java's promise a reality for
businesses of all sizes."
Widespread Partner Support
With more than 75,000 copies of the award-winning PowerJ beta distributed
world-wide, PowerJ has received strong support from Sybase CODE Partners,
System Integrators, and VARs. A wide range of vendors have already expressed
their intent to support PowerJ including American Management Systems, Sales
Vision Inc, KL Group, Visigenic Software Inc, XDB Systems Inc, ObjectSpace
